Dir: Louis Malle/1987/France/French w/ English subtitles/ 103 minutes
Winner of 7 French Awards! The Cesar Awards-
"Which of us cannot remember a moment when we did or said precisely the wrong thing, irretrievably, irreparably? The instant the action was completed or the words were spoken we burned with shame and regret, but what we had done never could be repaired. Such moments are rare, and they occur most often in childhood, before we have been trained to think before we act. "Au Revoir les Enfants" ("Goodbye, Children") is a film about such a moment, about a quick, unthinking glance that may have cost four people their lives."
"The film was written and directed by Louis Malle, who based it on a childhood memory. Judging by the tears I saw streaming down his face on the night the film was shown at the Telluride Film Festival, the memory had caused him pain for many years. His story takes place in 1944, in a Catholic boarding school in Nazi-occupied France. At the start of a new semester, three new students are enrolled, and we realize immediately that they are Jews, disguised with new names and identities in an attempt to hide them from the Nazis." Sixteen, overweight, abused and pregnant with her second child, Precious is a lost soul who has shut down emotionally from a life that seems to conspire against her. It’s only when a caring counselor sees the shining light buried inside of her that things begin to change. Filled with remarkable performances, Precious is a powerful story of hope and redemption rising up from the lowest depths imaginable. Roger Ebert calls Precious “a great American film.”

Johannesburg, South Africa. For nearly 30 years, an alien mothership has been hovering over the city and its rescued starving occupants quarantined in District 9, a refugee camp/shantytown. Now, with tensions between humans and aliens (called “prawns”) escalating ever more often to the boiling point, the aliens are to be relocated to District 10, a barely-disguised concentration camp. Wikus Van De Merwe has been assigned the job of leading the pre-relocation notification process by his military contractor employer. When unforeseen complications develop, Wikus finds himself on the run and being forced to question everything he once believed to be true.
