Dir: Jannicke Systad Jacobsen / 2012 / Norway / in Norwegian with English Subtitles/76 min / HD Digital

Having won attention last year at the Tribeca Film Festival for director and writer Jannicke Systad Jacobsen’s artfully broad screenplay, and then receiving five nominations for Norway’s Amanda Awards (including for Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress), this irreverent and creative Norwegian comedy keeps trying to find a way to break through. It’s as much ensemble comedy as it is anything, with Alma (Helene Bergsholm) at the center of it all. Isolated in the Norwegian backcountry in a fjord-side village, Alma is a 15-year-old girl who can’t keep her mind on anything but sex. Orbited by a host of friends, family, and other kooks, Alma spends her days fantasizing about the boy she wants—and about everyone else she sees too, including her best friend’s mean older sister and even her boss at the quicky mart—in a series of energetic set pieces full of surprising moments. “When not asking audience members to figure out what’s in Alma’s head and what isn’t, Systad Jacobsen, working with a cast of mostly first-time actors, reveals her strengths with the more fully conceived supporting characters,” writes Melissa Anderson of The Village Voice.
