Johannesburg, South Africa. For nearly 30 years, an alien mothership has been hovering over the city and its rescued starving occupants quarantined in District 9, a refugee camp/shantytown. Now, with tensions between humans and aliens (called “prawns”) escalating ever more often to the boiling point, the aliens are to be relocated to District 10, a barely-disguised concentration camp. Wikus Van De Merwe has been assigned the job of leading the pre-relocation notification process by his military contractor employer. When unforeseen complications develop, Wikus finds himself on the run and being forced to question everything he once believed to be true.
